Be The Match for Miles and Others Like him
WEAR TV ABC 3 Hosts Bone Marrow Registry Drive

Every year, more than 12,000 patients like Miles in the U.S. are diagnosed with life-threatening blood cancer diseases for which a bone marrow transplant may be their best or only hope of a cure. About 70 percent of patients in need of a transplant do not have a matching donor in their family and the cure depends on unrelated individuals who join the Be The Match Registry.

Patients are most likely to match someone who shares their ethnic background. There are not enough young members of diverse racial and ethnic heritage to help all patients in need of a marrow transplant.

Miles Wright

Joining the donor registry is easy. No finger pricks or blood samples, just a simple easy, quick cheek swab. Eligibility requirements are: be between the ages of 18-44, be willing to donate to any patient in need and meet the health guidelines. There is no fee to join the registry.

On Monday April 15 at Pensacola State College located at 1000 College Boulevard, there will be a third bone marrow registry drive and also a blood drive with Northwest Florida Blood Services from 10am-3pm.

Eastern Shipbuilding Group, builder of larger offshore support vessels, tugs, ferries, barges, fishing vessels, and other specialty vessels for customers coast to coast and around the world, recently held a three-day blood drive. Employees at the Allanton Yard registered 200 blood donors and Eastern’s Nelson Street facility registered 65 blood donors. This means many patients and families in local Panama City hospitals will receive needed blood from this blood drive.

Executive Vice President Kenny Munroe was pleased with the turnout of workers and noted their commitment to making a difference in the community. He said, “We are committed to helping the blood needs of patients and families in our Bay County hospitals.”

Eastern Shipbuilding Group has been designing and building vessels here in Bay County since 1976 and currently employs over 1300 employees. Eastern has facilities at 2200 Nelson Street and at 13300 Allanton Road in Panama City. Blood center officials commented that even a torrential rain did not keep the workers from donating.

Pensacola, Flori
da – Northwest Florida Blood Services has received word from America’s Blood Centers that Kia Autosport of Pensacola was recognized as the Corporation of the Year and Clyde Parazine, blood donor and Donor Chair for Olive Baptist Church, has received the Larry Frederick Award.

America’s Blood Centers is North America’s network of non-profit community blood centers located in 45 states and Canada operating over 600 donor centers.
