Blood Facts… Did you know? • Both O Negative and B Negative are rare. Only 7 % of the population has O Negative and only 1% has B Negative. • Like eye color, blood type is inherited. • There is no substitute for blood. • Blood is needed for emergencies and for patients with cancer and leukemia. • A single blood donation can be separated into blood components and can save the lives of about 3 people. • Blood components are red cells, platelets and plasma.
August 6, 2010 -Northwest Florida Blood Services Foundation, Inc. Board of Directors have announced the postponement of the Gift of Life Gala planned for September 25 according to Board President Father Jack Gray and Gala Committee Chairman Gary Watson.
Board President Gray commenting on the decision said “we have observed that donations are increasingly difficult to acquire, as the prolonged downturn in the economy and the local repercussions from the BP oil spill have necessitated a belt-tightening by local contributors. We would rather see charitable donations go to feed hungry families and help those who have been negatively impacted by the loss of business caused by the oil spill”. “Because of the generosity of many contributors over the past couple of years, we have continued to offer first-rate blood services and look forward to rescheduling a Gift of Life Gala in the future”, concluded Gray.
Northwest Florida Blood Services provides blood and blood components to 25 community hospitals in the Florida Panhandle and South Alabama. Blood drives and centers are open seven days a week to help provide needed blood for patients, families and friends in local hospitals.

FLORIDA BLOOD SERVICES AND NORTHWEST FLORIDA BLOOD CENTER FORM REGIONAL ALLIANCE
Two of Florida’s leading blood centers, Florida Blood Services (FBS) and Northwest Florida Blood Center (NFBC), each of which have over 60 years of community based blood banking expertise, are merging to better serve the donors, patients and healthcare facilities in our communities. The merger will result in an even stronger regional commitment in providing blood and blood components to the local communities, while capitalizing on the latest technologies. “FBS has been providing testing services for over a decade for the blood center and that has cemented a strong mutual alliance,” said Northwest Florida Blood Center CEO Eugene E. Roberts, Jr. Florida Blood Services is the third largest donor testing service in the United States. “The growth of the market, coupled with the more complex testing and regulations from the government, has required all blood banks to operate on a much more sophisticated level with very thin margins,” said Roy Berke, Chairman of the FBS Board of Directors.
