This page of the web site is dedicated to explaining automated collection. We currently use automation at our fixed sites, and some mobile units. This month's spotlight is on Alyx.
The Alyx system collects 2 units of Red Cells from a Donor and returns the Plasma. Essentially it becomes a zero loss of volume system. Some Additional Details follow:
Unlike a traditional whole blood donation, Automated Red Cell Collection allows the donor to safely give two units of red blood cells, instead of just one. The process separates blood into its components while it is being drawn. Because only red blood cells are being collected, enough can be collected for two red cell transfusions. The remaining components are returned to the donor.
